honestly there's like a few main things about what makes a ship worth shipping to me. Mostly, at large, it's simply, does the dynamic create and draw out interesting things about each of them that you can't get another way. And this is why sometimes darker and unhealthy ships with very little romance or affection involved can still be interesting. Not shipping as in I think they're soulmates or even in love, or that I want them to get married and have babies, but shipping as in, these two make each other react and explode in ways that are exciting and fascinating to watch β like mixing chemicals and seeing what blows up.
Like I'm a multishipper at heart because there are so many interesting character dynamics, but the ones that really get their hooks in me are the ones that just keep giving and making the wheels turn. Where the characters are interesting on their own merit and then you put them with another person and it changes both of them. When it reveals things and catalyzes change in interesting ways.
But also, importantly, the characters need to be interested in each other, and in what makes the other person tick. When they gravitate towards each other. When they find each other fascinating. That like each other and like spending time with each other even simply as friends. That like each other in spite of themselves.
And for me personally, characters that make each other want to be better people, even if those efforts are flawed just... itches my brain right. Making each other worse can be really interesting, yeah... but there's something very healing to me about seeing people try, even if they're bad at it.
And yes, sometimes I do actually want them to get a happily ever after. I'm very tired, and there's always terrible things going on in the world, and everyone is always working so hard for just the smallest bit of good and relief. So... sometimes it's nice to see the characters get to have something safe and good and happy. Someone should get to have that.
